If we should mention in a few words which were the worlds of Clementina, I would basically point out four: the geography and the devastation of wild forest; the lexical and onomatopoeic recovery of their locals, solitary and isolated beings; the feelings, and in particular, love as a central issue; the female condition. In all of them, of course, the pain and frustration before destiny, which is always unbeatable and invariable.
Maybe for that reason, Quenel’s stories may become rather rough as they are read in these times of high-speed and swiftness. She was the kind of writer who stopped at details and worked, let’s say, engraving her own pauses. I hope this publishing effort serves to recognize -late, though- one of the most outstanding writers of the XX century in Argentina.
