Andrea Rabih was too good of a writer to be distracted from their work by their own suffering, and she treats these texts not as an expression of pain or as a goodbye letter; least of all as an emotional blackmail to future readers, but as stories: pure and independent verbal objects, which must affect and amaze their readers by themselves, without reference to their life or other external circumstances. There is not a single line in them that should be excused in the name of physical pain, grief, fear or urgency. It challenges us to find in these texts a single trait of self-compassion or indulgence. I think that the ideal reader of these stories should be as fierce as her. It’s the least she deserves.
